Today, we are back in Tokyo to do a few fun things before our vacation days are gone and our pocketbooks are well-spent. We started off our morning with a gorgeous sunrise from our room overlooking Tokyo Bay and this only meant good things for the day ahead.

We headed off to the Tsukiji Market, an outdoor neighborhood filled with vendors selling anything and everything – including Wasabi ice cream. It wasn’t quite as organized as the market in Kyoto, but it still was massive with people absolutely everywhere (in masks). We walked around for awhile, before I had enough of brushing shoulder-to-shoulder with others. That’s one thing about this trip that I knew I would miss: peace and quiet, less people-y times.

We frolicked around the Ginza area of Tokyo, hopping in and out of shops, while getting sweet treats fairly often and finding all the flavors of KitKats you could possibly imagine. I absolutely love dessert and Japan doesn’t disappoint for this! I’ve had so many good treats, sometimes multiple in the same day – no shame in my game!

As we walked around town, it was very noticeable how organized the streets were. There were dedicated biking lanes and walking lanes. There’s also this yellow line down the middle of the sidewalk in many areas that is raised up with bumps and lines. To educate myself, I learned that this line is called tenji blocks and is a form of braille used by the blind to navigate around town. What a cool concept!

We continued on our day, grabbing food, before a quick reset. We traveled by train to the Roppongi Hills area for one last dinner with Yakinuku (Japanese BBQ steak). We hit up a place on Yelp that did not fall short at all! Everything was on skewers and grilled in front of us – fresh. Pork-rolled everything and every cut of sirloin possible was fresh and ready to devour. It was so good but of course, I was hungry not long after dinner, which has driven my husband crazy! He doesn’t get how or why I eat so much, but I tell him that I’m still making up for lost time earlier in the trip.

We made a stop at the iconic Tokyo Tower on the way back to our hotel. We jumped in line with others to go to the top observation deck which is 250m from the ground. After what seemed like an eternity, we were up in the tower glancing over the city-lit horizon amongst the dark starry skies. It was a remarkable sight to see, for sure.

Today, we had no agenda and it made for a fun day of sight-seeing and plenty of miles by foot, train, and Uber. It’s nice every now and then to have unplanned adventures to see where the day takes you. This is hard for me at times, but very refreshing and re-energizing when it does happen. When was the last time you explored for fun without an agenda or planned destination? What did you like about it or dislike about it?
